Performance Management / Performance Review

Action Checklist

  1. Prepare for the Meeting - Collate information, review objectives for preceding 12 months, identify objectives for next 12 months, personal development achieved / required.
  2. Arrange for Performance Review meeting - Let the person now well in advance so they can prepare a personal assessment of the year.
  3. Prepare Environment - informal and friendly rather than cold and hostile.
  4. Use a Consultative Approach - Ask open questions, listen to what the person has to say, probe where necessary.  Remember it is conversation.
  5. Start the Discussion - Relax the other person, emphasise development and improvement
  6. Develop the discussion - Encourage self assessment, build self esteem, concentrate upon job performance not personalities.  Never make a statement you cannot back up or report hearsay.
  7. Deal with Difficulties and focus on Improvements - last year may have had its ups and downs but focus on what has been learnt and how it will deliver better performance now.
  8. Agree areas for improvement.
  9. Rate the overall Performance for the period under review - be fair and consistent across all employees that you manage.
  10. Close the Discussion - Thank the person for their efforts and focus upon the period ahead.
