The seemingly unending stream of viruses, trojans, worms and spam e mail offering you 'deals too good to be true', are conspiring to make the internet more of a threat than a pleasure.  Without adequate security measure for your PC and internet connection your machine is a real target for those intent on disabling or taking over your computer.

You wouldn't leave the front door of your house open all day - so why do the same with your computer?

In our private lives it is easy to appreciate the threats that are around us and take the necessary precautions.  With computers the threat is always unseen and often unknown, and as a result it is too easy to dismiss it as something that 'won't happen to me'.   Imagine losing all (yes all) of the files on your computer?  How would you cope if you found that all of sudden your email address had been blacklisted and you no longer could send e mail?  Neither are pleasant thoughts but the time to act is before the threat becomes a reality.
