{"id":440,"date":"2020-07-06T14:08:35","date_gmt":"2020-07-06T13:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.qd-design.co.uk\/blog\/?p=440"},"modified":"2020-07-06T14:08:35","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T13:08:35","slug":"evading-the-edge-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qd-design.co.uk\/blog\/evading-the-edge-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Evading the Edge Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those &#8216;lovely&#8217; people at Microsoft have been tinkering with the Edge browser.\u00a0 They are keen for us to try it.\u00a0 So keen, that it is being pushed out as a &#8216;Windows Update&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Following a restart of your machine you will be faced with this screen&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qd-design.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/edge-update-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Edge Update Screen\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qd-design.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/edge-update-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.qd-design.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/edge-update-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.qd-design.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/edge-update-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.qd-design.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/edge-update.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From which it is impossible to escape.\u00a0 There is no close button, hitting Escape does nothing and even pulling up the Task Manager with Ctrl + Alt +Del doesn&#8217;t give a clue as to how to avoid going through the forced migration process.<\/p>\n<p>Migration is probably the wrong word, it is more like your account is being taken hostage by Edge.\u00a0 By the time you reach this screen it has slurped up a lot of your details from your existing browser (history, favourites, saved card details etc) and is is waiting for you to confirm your acceptance of the migration.\u00a0 It seems impossible to avoid being sucked into &#8216;new&#8217; Edge;\u00a0 resistance, as they say, is futile!<\/p>\n<p>However, you can sidestep it,<strong> if you know how<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Avoid Edge<\/h2>\n<p>Counter intuitively, you do first have to hit the &#8216;Get Started&#8217; button.\u00a0 However, unlike a parachute jump without the parachute, this is one adventure where you will live to tell the tale.<\/p>\n<p>After hitting<strong> Get Started<\/strong>, it will ask you if you want to import from your existing browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, it doesn&#8217;t matter, they really, REALLY want you to migrate).\u00a0 Along side this very prominent button, is a much less prominent link that says &#8220;<strong>Continue Without Importing<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 Hit this option.<\/p>\n<p>You will be pestered to change your mind but persist and you can move on and continue with your preferred browser.<\/p>\n<p>Those of you with a long memory may recall when Microsoft were punished (heavily) for making it difficult for Windows users to use any browser other than Internet Explorer.\u00a0 It feels like we have gone full circle!<\/p>\n<p>By all means Microsoft, create new versions of your software. By all means roll it out to user but please don&#8217;t force me to use it.\u00a0 I would like to decide for myself.\u00a0 &#8216;New&#8217; Edge has been getting favourable reviews and I was half tempted to give it a try.
